The album Frequent Flyers, complied by accomplished producers Deep and Ben Boogie, is a compilation of songs by some of the best underground emcees in New York. Not lyricists themselves, Deep and Ben stay behind the scenes to craft beats for artists like L.I.F.E. Long, Many Styles, and Flex Wundah among a host of other unknown rappers.
The compilation includes a variety of the artists’ styles that vary to such a degree that each track promises something innovative. It’s an assumed aspect of any compilation, but you tend to get producers who put together artists from the same genre or who have similar styles of music… That isn’t Frequent Flyers, where the only common denominators are great production, interesting topics, and dope rhymes. The album begins with its best track, the motivational “The Beauty” featuring Many Styles and Reason. Backed by the short loop of a guitar and heavy drums, Many Styles raps, “You’ve been smothered in the bottom of a melting pot/ letting yourself be molded into something you’re not/ I’d advise you to do otherwise/ though others tried and failed/ still and all where they couldn’t succeed I will prevail.” His deep voice and staccato delivery makes the song.
The song is also an example of what makes the album sound so good. Both Deep and Ben Boogie create beats that match the artist; so the R&B “Fortress” gives listeners a song that has singer Rae’s smooth and rich voice tailored to the melancholy sounds of thunderous of horns. The Mood is perfectly set as she sings about the downs of city life.
Another stand out track is the posse cut “Italian Job” featuring L.I.F.E. Long, IDE, Alucard, Sav Kills, Dos Noun, Savage Messiah, Brix, and Unknown as the song speeds through the New York music hustling scene. IDE raps, “CDs in my bubble jacket/ ten bucks for those who love that rap shit!”
From the obscenely hilarious “Sit On My Face” by schizo rapper Jak Progresso to the hardcore street rhymes of Raze and Jav in “Snap,” Frequent Flyers is a buffet for anyone who is a fan of good music and not of artists who box themselves in a genre. |
