Jinsu - "The New Prince"
Words Angel Ramirez & June Medrano

It has been quite a long time since we have heard of any new, young talented teen artists as creatively inclined with his lyrics as Young Jinsu. The emcee was born into Rap literally (as his father often placed headphones around his wife's belly), and the young rap phenom displays lyrical prowess way beyond his years with sharp lyrics   and punch lines like "albums fire you got to go to hell to cope it." Appropriately named after the razor sharp ginsu knives Jinsu is in a class of his own in the teen category, having been crowned the new teen king of hip-hop by mainstream chart topper Bow Wow.

Collaborating on tracks with household names like Chris Brown and Chrisette Michele, and sharing the same stage with superstars like Diddy, Fabolous and the Wu -Tang Clan, the emcee's short but lively career is a testament to his talent and how far he will go in the near future. Young Jinsu has forged his way into the hip hop scene, has raised the bar and has set himself as the standard in any up and coming teen stars that follow behind him.

Plateau: So I'm sitting trying to figure out how did you exactly get the name Young Jinsu?

Young Jinsu: I got the name actually from my godfather; he gave me the name when I was five years old. I was always rapping other people rhymes... Biggie's and Pac's and then I started rhyming my own. He starting saying "The way you rhyme is sharp like a ginsu knife." My real name is Jah-Youth "he was like since your real name starts with a J, your name should be Jinsu." So people used to be asking me "Yo Shorty what's your name," I was like "Little Jinsu." It made sense, so I just kept it.

Plateau: So how did you get started in this Hip-Hop game?

Young Jinsu: Actually, I went through an unsigned hype tour that my manager Biggs was having... at the time he wasn't my manager... I always been rapping, for the longest, but I went through the unsigned hype tour, I was actually living in Pennsylvania at the time and I got a phone call saying that I needed to do an audition. So we drove out to New York the next day, did the audition, and out of 400 people my manager loved me the most. Like I said before, at the time he wasn't my manager... so we just kept in contact and I did a couple of shows for them. We did Club Speed, Exit, Greek Fest and you know that's a tough crowd. We just kept doing shows and at the last one which was Club Exit he signed me, did the contract, got the chain and from then it's been history just working with my team.

Plateau: Do you get nervous when you perform?

Young Jinsu: Nah, I'm natural it just comes out.

Plateau: Being that you're such a young artist, do you feel like certain people overlook you because of your age?

Young Jinsu: Yea, sometimes. I feel like people they criticize me when they don't even know me. They believe just because I'm young I'm going to be a bubble gum rapper. That's what I call people that come out with those little "kiddy" songs.  I just want to show people when my album comes out "It's My Time" on Nov 18th. I just want them to see and hear that I'm lyrical.

Plateau: Well, certain people didn't over look you. I saw you have a track with Chris Brown and Bow Wow. How did that come about?

Young Jinsu: The Bow Wow track... I was actually supposed to sign with Bow Wow, but the business part didn't work out. But it was a good look for me. There no hard feelings  with none of them, it was a great look for me and I enjoyed doing those songs.

Plateau: I also saw that Bow Wow christened you the new "Prince of Hip Hop." How do you feel about that?

Young Jinsu: Coming from him though I can't even front that was a great look. He's been in the game for many years now, and me coming in the game as a fresh new artist and getting the respect from him, knowing that he's been doing it for the longest, and he laid out the blueprint for young artist like me. I'm paying homage "Good lookin."

Plateau: So who are your influences?

Young Jinsu: My influences in the game, I have two right now. Jay-Z because he's real consistent with his hits... and Biggie and 2pac, those are my favorites, especially 2pac he's like the main one that influenced me.

Plateau: So I know you said your album is set to drop in the near future but what else can we expect to see from you ? Any shows?

Young Jinsu: Oh yea, we're doing a promo tour for the album of course. I actually just finished a school tour. I did like a good 30 to 40 schools and camps... and that went excellent. I  got a great response from all the kids. I did from kindergarten to first grade to middle school to high school and that went well. Of course in the future where going to have a lot of tour dates. There's plenty to come in the future, a lot of shows and more music.

Plateau: So what would you say to the Independent artist that would like to accomplish the things you accomplished at such a young age?

Young Jinsu: I would have to say stay focused and keep writing. Make sure you keep writing, always write. That's one thing that my manager is always on me about "Yo Jin keep writing" and just know that there always somebody out there willing to take your spot. So you just got to master your craft and just stay focused, stay humble. The two h's in the game I go by are Humble and stay Hungry.
